Our Story

From a solo Kolkata chamber to a two-city litigation practice

Patra’s Law Chambers began in 2020 as the independent practice of Advocate Sudip Patra, founder of the chambers, who holds a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering and an LL.B. (Hons.) in Intellectual Property Law. That mix of engineering and law still shapes how the chambers reads a file: closely, in order, and with attention to the documents that decide a matter. The firm started as a solo practice at Hare Street, Kolkata, a short distance from the Calcutta High Court.

In 2023 the firm opened a second chamber in Paharganj, New Delhi. Two offices let us take up matters before the Supreme Court of India, the Delhi courts, the Calcutta High Court and tribunals such as the CAT, AFT, DRT/DRAT and NCLT, and help clients whose cases run across both cities. Courts and tribunals publish their own rules and cause lists, and we ask clients to check these on the official eCourts Services portal. Every matter is assessed on its own facts, and no outcome can be promised.

Where you stand

Which court or tribunal does your matter belong to?

Different disputes go to different forums, and a wrong forum can cost time. This is general information, not legal advice. Pick the paper or situation closest to yours.

Step by step

How a matter moves through the chambers

This is a general outline of how most matters begin with us. Each case differs, and no outcome can be promised.

You reach us on +91 890 222 4444 or at [email protected]. The team notes the basic facts and fixes a consultation at the Kolkata or Delhi office.

Bring your papers, notices and orders. The advocate hears the facts, reads the documents and explains the possible forum and remedies in plain language.

Dates, limitation periods and available remedies are checked against the papers. If something is missing, you are told what to obtain.

The petition, application or reply is drafted and shared with you for review. It is filed in the right court or tribunal after you approve it.

The team appears at each hearing and keeps you informed of the next date and any order passed. Questions are answered as the case proceeds.

Procedure

How a matter begins at Patra's Law Chambers

Reach either chamber

Call or WhatsApp +91 890 222 4444, or write to [email protected]. Tell us in a few lines what happened, which court or authority is involved and any date already fixed. We will tell you whether the Kolkata or the Delhi office is the right one for your matter.

Gather your papers

Before the meeting, collect every notice, order, agreement, FIR, letter and receipt connected with the dispute, in date order. Copies are enough for the first meeting. Keep the originals safe, and bring any summons or hearing date you have received, because it decides how quickly we need to act.

First consultation

Advocate Sudip Patra or a member of the team goes through the facts and documents with you, in person at NICCO House, Kolkata or Paharganj, New Delhi, or by phone or video. We explain where you stand under the law, the options open to you and the time limits that apply.

Engagement and vakalatnama

If you decide to go ahead, the scope of work and the fees are agreed in writing first. You then sign a vakalatnama, the document that authorises the advocate to appear for you before the court or tribunal. Read it before you sign, and keep a copy.

Drafting and filing

We draft the petition, application, reply or appeal from your documents and share it with you to check the facts before it is filed. It is then filed before the right forum, whether the Supreme Court, the Calcutta High Court, the Delhi courts, or a tribunal such as the CAT, NCLT or DRT.

Hearings and updates

We keep you told about each hearing date, what happened in court and what the next step is. Some hearings need you in person, for example to give evidence or sign an affidavit, and we tell you about these in advance. You can ask for copies of orders as they are passed.

Pitfalls

Mistakes to avoid before you meet a lawyer

✕

Waiting until the deadline is close Most cases have to be filed within a fixed time under the Limitation Act, 1963 or the special law that applies, and some appeals allow only a few weeks. Speak to a lawyer as soon as you receive a notice or order, so that you do not lose your remedy.

✕

Leaving out unhelpful facts Your advocate can only advise you properly if you tell the whole story, including the parts that seem to go against you. What you tell your advocate in confidence is protected under the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023.

✕

Signing papers without reading them Do not sign a vakalatnama, affidavit or settlement that you have not read and understood. Ask for any word or clause to be explained, and keep a copy of everything you sign.

✕

Trusting anyone who promises a result No advocate can honestly promise how a court will decide. Under Bar Council of India rules, advocates may not advertise or solicit work, so be careful of anyone who guarantees an outcome or pushes you to hire them.

Representation

Speak with the chambers about your matter

If you have a court or tribunal matter in Kolkata, Delhi or elsewhere in India, you can arrange a consultation at either office. Please bring the order, notice or documents you have received. We will explain the forum, the likely procedure and the time limits that may apply, so that you can decide how to proceed. No result can be promised in any matter, and advice depends on the facts and documents.
